FAQs

How can I tell if my food has added sugars?

Added sugars will be detailed in the ingredients list of a food product. By law, all food and drink products must list all ingredients in the product, with the largest amount first and the lowest ingredient listed last.

Looking at where sugars feature in the ingredients list will tell you how much, and how many, added sugars are in the food.

The nutrition information panel will also list the total amount of carbohydrates and total sugars in the product. The amount of sugars in the nutrition information panel will include naturally occurring sugars, such as those found in fruit, as well as added sugars.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand are looking into labeling approaches that might provide more information on sugar, so this may change in the future.
