FSANZ data on sugars intake in Australia

Food standards Australia and New Zealand have a webpage on sugar, including the latest statistics on sugar consumption in Australia from  the Australian Bureau of Statistics :

  • Australians reduced their consumption of free sugars between 1995 and 2011-12 from 12.5% to 10.9% of total energy. The WHO target is 10% of energy.
  • Australians are still exceeding the WHO 10%En target on average but the proportion of people exceeding the limit fell from 54% to 46% between 1995 and 2011-12.
  • In both periods, the most common source of free sugars were sweet drinks but the proportion of energy from these declined from 44% to 37% between 1995 and 2011-12.
  • The largest declines in free sugars were among children with proportion of energy from free sugars falling from 17% to 13%
  • Most of the decline in children’s free sugars intake was due to a reduction in sweetened drinks
